CHIEF’S CORNER

A few weeks ago I placed a segment in our weekly crime analysis report reminding each and every one of you that we all need to be very cautious in and around our schools.  We asked that everyone please use caution when you are in the school zones.  Please drive under the posted school zone speed limits.  Please watch out for kids crossing the street.  We also asked that you don't walk your kids across the street unless it is at an intersection or with the assistance of a school crossing guard.

I was reminded by one of our residents that I neglected to include one important aspect of driver safety and responsibility in our school zones.

This relates to the use of cell phones.  Signs are posted in all our school zones reminding drivers that it is now against the law to use your cell phones while driving through our school zones during school zone hours.

Our goal is to maintain a safe environment in and around our schools.  Please be careful out there.

Free Home Security Service Offered by Police Department

The Memorial Villages Police Department wants to remind all our residents that, in an effort to help our citizens better safeguard their home, we offer a free home security inspection service for the residents of Bunker Hill, Piney Point, and Hunters Creek Villages. MVPD has about a dozen officers certified by the state to conduct these inspections. Officers will check windows and door locks, and types of alarms for state-required minimum standards. Residents who pass the inspection are eligible for up to a 15% discount on their homeowners insurance. In addition to the state inspection, officers can make security suggestions concerning lighting, cameras, or how to secure your home when you are away.
“This service has been available for years, but very few people take advantage of it,” says Sergeant Haril Walpole, who coordinates the program. The police department is working towards getting the community more involved in crime prevention. Sergeant Walpole says, “Our officers work very hard to keep our community safe, but we can’t be everywhere, all of the time. We need more eyes and ears. That’s where the community can help.”
Residents can get a handout from the police department that explains the requirements for the insurance discount, as well as some additional security tips. The information can be picked up at the police station or sent by mail or email.  For further information please see free to contact Sergeant Walpole at hwalpole@mvpdtx.org or 713.365.3712.

Crime Prevention Tips

This week I want to pass along some information that has been floating around the internet about social networking.  Many people constantly update these sites to let everyone know where they are.  A web developer created a website to prove how dangerous this can be.

It's called: Please Rob Me. The link is at http://pleaserobme.com/

It constantly updates with people saying where they are.  Basically this is broadcasting to the world that you are not home.  There is another site that utilizes this idea but allows you to search by city; you can imagine how easy it would be for a criminal to target you through this site.  Please keep this in mind when using Twitter, Facebook and similar services.
