Be On the Look-Out

Village Residents:

The following vehicle and suspect were seen at the location of a residential burglary a few hours before the burglary took place.

A resident advised that he spoke with a 6' foot tall, stocky, black male (B/M), wearing a gray pull over collar shirt, and card style badge (no photograph) hanging around the neck (unknown what the card stated/ title etc.).  The resident advised that while speaking with him at the door, the B/M inquired if the entry gates to the rear of the property were unlocked, because he needed access to the electric meter.  He also asked where the electric meter was located.  The resident provided the information.  The resident stated that when he went back upstairs he observed the B/M exit the backyard, walk across the street, and get into a white van.

Later that day the residence was burglarized by breaking in through the back doors.

Detectives have confirmed that the utility company did not have anyone out in the area asking for access to the backyards that day.

If you are approached by a person matching the above description asking for access to your backyard, please contact the police department immediately.

Sincerely,

Gary M Brye

Free Home Security Service Offered by Police Department

The Memorial Villages Police Department wants to remind all our residents that, in an effort to help our citizens better safeguard their home, we offer a free home security inspection service for the residents of Bunker Hill, Piney Point, and Hunters Creek Villages. MVPD has about a dozen officers certified by the state to conduct these inspections. Officers will check windows and door locks, and types of alarms for state-required minimum standards. Residents who pass the inspection are eligible for up to a 15% discount on their homeowners insurance. In addition to the state inspection, officers can make security suggestions concerning lighting, cameras, or how to secure your home when you are away.
“This service has been available for years, but very few people take advantage of it,” says Sergeant Haril Walpole, who coordinates the program. The police department is working towards getting the community more involved in crime prevention. Sergeant Walpole says, “Our officers work very hard to keep our community safe, but we can’t be everywhere, all of the time. We need more eyes and ears. That’s where the community can help.”
Residents can get a handout from the police department that explains the requirements for the insurance discount, as well as some additional security tips. The information can be picked up at the police station or sent by mail or email.  For further information please see free to contact Sergeant Walpole at hwalpole@mvpdtx.org or 713.365.3712.

Crime Prevention Tips

This week’s crime prevention tips deal with safety while you are away from home.  When you are out in public especially while shopping it is recommended that you not wear a lot of expensive jewelry. Criminals are known to frequent malls and other busy shopping venues in search of victims wearing this type of jewelry. They will then usually follow their intended victim(s) into a parking lot or may even attempt to follow them home and rob them for the jewelry.

When you are out shopping watch for anyone who seems to be loitering near mall or store entrances watching customers as they enter and leave.  If you should observe anyone doing this, report it to store officials IMMEDIATELY, so that store/mall security or police can check out these people.

When you leave a store and go into the parking lot have your keys out so that you do not have to spend a lot of time standing in the parking lot struggling with packages and keys while you attempt to get into your vehicle.
ALWAYS look inside of your vehicle before you get in to be sure that someone has not gained entry during your absence and is hiding inside.

AS SOON as you get into your vehicle IMMEDIATELY lock the doors so nobody else can get in with you.

When you are driving watch your mirrors for any other vehicles that appear to be following you. If you suspect that you are being followed DO NOT drive home. Make several un-signaled turns to see if the suspect vehicle turns also. If the other vehicle does follow you then use your cellular telephone to call the police or drive to a police or fire station to receive assistance.
