There has been a whole lot of talk about contact
tracing and the hiring of hundreds of individuals over the coming weeks in
the Houston area, specifically for contact tracing of COVID-19 exposures. I
personally am not exactly sure how this is going to work and to what level of
access to personal information the “tracers” are going to have.
Unfortunately, of even greater concern, is how easily
criminals can take advantage of the current COVID-19 pandemic and use the guise
of being a Contact Tracer to obtain personal information that can lead to
identity theft or fraud.
Until this process and/or need, can be figured out and
verified, I strongly recommend that no one provide any personal information to
anyone who claims to be a part of “Contact Tracing”. Under no circumstances
provide any personal identifiers such as DOB, Social Security
numbers, insurance numbers or policy info, passwords, banking or credit card
information. Should you receive an inquiry from someone claiming to be a
contact tracer informing you of a possible exposure to an infected individual,
simply thank them and contact your primary healthcare provider for instructions
specific to you.
Should someone show up at your front door unannounced,
claiming to be a “Contact Tracer” give us a call so we can check them out, and
verify that they are who they say they are.
We will keep you informed over the coming weeks as we
all learn more about contact tracing and what it is.
Have a great Saturday.
